The Weka is a very inquisitive New Zealand bird. While they are generally cautious, they will walk right up to you looking for food. They are about the size of a chicken. My wife and I found this one searching for crabs on the coast of Ulva Island. This small island is located in a bay of Stewart Island on the far south side of New Zealand.

Ulva Island has been set aside as a native bird sanctuary. It is a great place to spend a full day bird-watching while tramping around on the well laid out trails from beach to forest and back to beach. When we arrived on this beach on the western side of the island, there was a school group of young elementary aged children. A few of the kids were flipping rocks over and the Weka would quickly inspect the area vacated by the rock to find many crabs. It honestly seemed kind of unfair to the crabs…
