Standing at Attention

Have you ever run across a rabid badger while on a 14-mile slog through the wilderness? No? Me neither… not yet anyways.

This little yellow-bellied creature is in fact a Yellow-bellied Marmot. (See what I did there?) I was photographing the landscape surrounding Sky Pond in Rocky Mountain National Park when my wife started aggressively “Pssst’ing” me. I turned to see her pointing at my feet. I looked down and this little guy was staring me down while slowly approaching me on his hind legs. I think this is a result of too many tourists leaving food lying around or worse feeding the cute little critters. Either way he had no problem coming in very close to check out the foreigner invading on his territory. I’ve seen a lot of Marmots since moving to Colorado and I’ve even seen a few hop up on their hind legs to get a better vantage point, but this is the first time I’ve seen one do so in such close proximity to me.
