Glossy Ibis

Glossy Ibis

This colorful bird is called a Glossy Ibis and was found at the Russell Lakes State Wildlife Area in Saguache, Colorado. The wildlife area is on Hwy 285 and about an hour and fifteen minute drive from The Great Sand Dunes National Park. Whenever Jake and I visit the dunes, this wildlife area is a usual stop for us too. The array of birds and ducks is incredible and you never know what unique creature you might spot, like the Glossy Ibis.

The gravel parking lot is within an oasis of trees off Hwy 285 and there are information signs about the animals you can potentially see here, primarily waterfowl and amphibians. A wooden boardwalk will lead your way through the wetlands and surrounding lakes while ducks, crickets, and frogs provide the natural music. This flat area also has the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the background, which makes a beautiful backdrop to capture a special moment at the wildlife area.  Highly recommended.

    1. We really got lucky. It came flying out of the deep grass and I swung around with the 300mm and laid down a burst of photos. Didn’t realize how colorful it really was till I got the images on the computer.
