Oh my, “what big teeth you have!” Whoops, wrong creature. This is a New Zealand fur seal.
Most seals are rather lazy creatures during the heat of the day, lounging around on the rocks and seemingly comfortable in the most uncomfortable looking positions, but this big guy wanted to move around. My wife and I watched him play on the pier in Oamaru, New Zealand for about half an hour. He seemed to be separated from the rest of the fur seals nearby and was trying to figure out how to get across the concrete pier. Several times we watched as this guy dove into the water, swam around, did barrel roles at the surface and then climbed back up onto the pier for a few minutes before returning to the water. We kept our distance, but he was still entertaining to watch.
