I guess this gives the term highway a whole new meaning… (get it…cause the giraffe is so high). 🙂
I took this image of the world’s tallest land animal while visiting Tanzania with Compassion International over a decade ago. The majestic creature seemed to pose in the road immediately after this car passed by. I have been to the “Dark Continent” twice and both trips were extraordinary. I long to return because of images like this that are etched on my soul. Africa is a place of extreme poverty and yet unrivaled wildlife and gorgeous landscapes. The giraffe to me is the oddest of creatures and yet very majestic in its uniqueness.
I am saddened by the news that was released yesterday from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in their red list of threatened species. They have moved the giraffe into the “vulnerable” category of species. While this isn’t near extension level, yet, it is cause for concern as apparently there are many factors involved in their steep 36% – 40% decline in population over the past thirty years. I found this shocking as on both of my trips to sub Saharan Africa the giraffes seemed to be abundant. I guess a lot has changed since the last time I was there. I only hope that this news is a wake up call to the world and that measures are taken to preserve these beautiful creatures.
