New Zealand is full of amazing landscapes and hidden oases. This is Tunnel Beach and it is one of those amazing hidden nooks located on the South Island near the town of Dunedin. The tunnel in the name refers to the land arch that has been carved out by the sea, but it could just as easily refer to the man-made tunnel that visitors have to use to access this secluded ocean front.
As you can see from the image the beach is surrounded by vertical cliff walls. The only way down is through the dark crudely carved tunnel, the exit of which can be seen on the right side of this image. Just getting down to the entrance of the tunnel is a steep decent which takes some effort to ascend once you are done. I loved the experience of descending into the earth and then coming back into the light having this unique beach all to ourselves. If you ever find yourself in the area it is well worth the effort.
