Snowy Desert

Medano Creek and Sand Creek are the unique driving forces that work with the wind to create the dunes at Great Sand Dunes National Park. The creeks are created when the snow melts in the Spring, but the existence of snow in such a dry desert landscape is a peculiar juxtaposition. It is a surreal experience to walk through a cold shallow creek on a hot day next to massive sand dunes that occasionally have sections of snow sitting on the sand bars in the creek.
