Sunrise at the massive shipping port in Progreso, Mexico. Progreso is a regular stop for a large portion of the cruise ships visiting the Yucatan Peninsula. It is the gateway to the ruins of the ancient Maya people. There are over 2,000 known Maya ruins on the Yucatan, but very few have been restored so that tourists can visit. Among those restored are the famed Chichen Itza and Uxmal.
This port juts out into the Caribbean Sea to accommodate the huge ships that dock here. From where this picture was taken, the mainland could not be seen and was more than a 10 minute bus ride away.
