This past Sunday the Southern Island of New Zealand was struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, followed by over half a dozen strong aftershocks. These quakes shook the northeastern coastal area around Kaikoura, New Zealand. The quake triggered landslides that covered parts of State Highway 1, which runs up the coast and, if you could see it, hugs much of the coast in this photo. I took this image on the beach in the heart of Kaikoura in April 2016.

When my wife and I visited New Zealand earlier this year, Kaikoura was a highlight for both of us. It is a gorgeous place with a diverse ecosystem and has a variety of aquatic life that live in or migrate through this area. My heart goes out to the people of New Zealand as they attempt to, once again, recover from a major earthquake. The islands sit on the Pacific’s “ring of fire” and as such they have dealt with devastating earthquakes in the past and will again in the future. The people here are a rugged and self-reliant type. I would ask all of you to join with us as we pray for these Kiwis (New Zealanders) as they dig themselves out and rebuild.
