Hiking Natural Bridges National Monument

Natural Bridges National Monument has a scenic drive that allows for some aerial views of some of the largest natural bridges in the world. But to really experience these massive rock formations you will need to venture into the remote desert canyons. Visitors are able to hike directly underneath all the natural bridges but the…

Visiting Natural Bridges National Monument Guide

In 1908 with the stroke of a pen and an “I so declare it,” President Theodore Roosevelt signed Utah’s first National Monument and the state’s first park into existence. Was it one of Utah’s big 5? Nope. It was the little known and seldom visited Natural Bridges National Monument. The remote location of this natural…

Pueblo Iris

The Iris has long been my favorite flower. This spectacular specimen, found in Pueblo, Colorado, really sets the bar for the beautiful flowers even higher.

Ice Plant Flower

This beautiful flower is actually called the Ice Plant flower. So called not because they thrive in cold environments, but rather the way they shimmer like ice. They actually grow well in dry areas, making them perfect for adding color to rock gardens. I found this one in Pueblo, Colorado, which has a dry climate.

Peek-a-boo

Today is “Flower Friday” and it’s always difficult to come up with a more interesting post than, “isn’t this flower gorgeous?” Well, I think this particular flower–an Iris–is stunning. The center petals with delicate veins almost look like it’s playing peek-a-boo with you. I’m also intrigued by the shades of violet. Every Iris is unique in…

Screech Owl

This is another look at the Western Screech Owl who resides at the Nature and Raptor Center in Pueblo, Colorado. According to their website, the Nature and Raptor Center does its best to rehabilitate injured birds of prey and then reintroduce them into the wild. Some are too injured though and never fully heal. Those birds become…

Yucca Flower

This is a closeup look at the delicate flower of the versatile Yucca plant. The Yucca plant is well adapted to its desert climate, but the flower only seems to last a few weeks before the flowering spike, along with all the flowers, wither and die. The dead flowers and spike can remain standing for many…

Modern Pueblo

This Modern Pueblo building is located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It houses the gift shop and museum at the Manitou cliff dwellings. According to visitcos.com, the building was originally built in 1904 and designed to mimic the Ancestral Puebloan Native American style. It has been renovated and added to over the last century.

Owl

This is a Western screech-owl. He is a resident of the Nature and Raptor Center of Pueblo, Colorado. According to audubon.org, a guide to North American birds, these small adaptable owls are very common from the southern coast of Alaska all the way south to the deserts of Arizona. They can be found in the remotest…

Window into a Lost World

This is a view through a window in Cliff Palace at Mesa Verde National Park. It’s easy to imagine the ancient Puebloan person who lived in this space, looking out this window at his or her magnificent cliff side community. Everyone here lived in such close quarters with their neighbors and each did their part to sustain this unique culture. It must have…
