This is a picture of the Pyramid of the Magician at Uxmal, taken from the stairs of the La Gran Pirámide. Uxmal is an ancient Mayan city located on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. At its cultural height, Uxmal had a population estimated at 15,000 people. It was inhabited and built between the years 500-1000 AD.
The Pyramid of the Magician is the largest structure at Uxmal and towers above the rest of the ancient city. Much of the complex has been recovered and cleared of the surrounding jungle. I like this photo because it gives the illusion of the Pyramid rising out of the tropical jungle, which is reminiscent of how it looked when restoration efforts started in the mid 19th century.
Uxmal is considered to be one of the best preserved cities from the Mayan Empire. All the stones are precision cut and placed without mortar. Today it is a popular tourist destination and a good alternative to the much more crowded Chichen Itza.
