This is a small section of the ancient city of Pompeii, Italy. It was lost to time by the devastation of Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in 79 AD. The church that sits on top of the now excavated ruins was there before the discovery of the first part of the ruins in 1709.
There is something so interesting and intrinsically human about the fact that we humans build on top of long forgotten cities that were buried by nature. The ruins of Pompeii as well as Rome and many other major historical cities were lost for centuries. Mankind built right on top of these once great meccas of civilization and didn’t know it until hundreds of years later they were rediscovered.
