What’s the goal of any good artist or craftsman? I believe it’s to take pride in your creation, to put hard work and detail into everything you do, regardless of the status that piece receives. Great craftsmanship, big and small, seems to withstand changes in trends through time.
I found this ancient door clasp on a small insignificant door at the Gyengbokgung Palace in South Korea. I was drawn to the detail of the faded paint on the small wooden door, but upon closer inspection, the way the iron was formed on this ancient clasp really stands out. It, like so much of this ancient palace, was painstakingly created by its craftsman. The name of the one who crafted this piece has been lost to time, but his art survives.
