In the southeastern corner of Colorado there is a place where you can walk in the footsteps of one of the largest land animals to ever roam the Earth. In this dried-up creek bed are the fossilized footprints of the Brontosaurus and Allosaurus dinosaurs. These remarkable tracks are found in the Comanche National Grasslands within the Picketwire Canyon.

Access to the site is allowed only via the Picketwire Trail and can be done on foot, non-motorized bike or horseback. The trail is a rather grueling 10.5 miles with very little shade from the sun. Another option for those who have 4×4 vehicles is to join a guided auto tour of the site.
My wife and I joined another couple and did the 4×4 tour. We borrowed a friend’s lifted Jeep Wrangler and it was a long, slow, bumpy ride in. It was our first time off-roading in such a vehicle and my wife found the experience a little nauseating. I found the whole experience to be very foreign and therefore perfect for the experience of “traveling back in time” to walk in these prehistoric footprints.
